Most of the coaching institutes teach very very basics in the class rooms and expect the students to build up at their homes. E.g. engineers find maths classes very basic and time wastage.

In my case, I did bad in CAT just because of one coaching institute. Through out the year, in all the sym-cats, they took tests where quant was toughest and verbal the easiest. While they preached that we should not go to the exam hall with a mindset, the papers made us do so. They say that the test series are varied and cover all that could appear in actual cat. But you can never beat CAT in throwing surprises. I missed cat only because of my mindset, which was shaped by the so called expert guidance of the coaching institutes.

---------CAT is the most competitive examination in the world. so one
needs to know all the tricks of the trade to crack it. this time the
competition had gone even higher.2 lakh people are writing it. and also
the time has been extended to two and a half hours. So we need to
maximise our scores in this short span of time. also these coaching
institutes teach us a lot of shortcuts especially in areas of
quant which is of gr8 value. these shortcuts would save a lot of time.1
mark here and there will make a world of differnce. also the professors
also prepare us mentally for the D-DAY.ALTHOUGH I DO AGREE THAT FINALLY

I think one should join a coaching institute. Because these institute

A coaching class is helpful in keeping u on track (specially if u r a
working professional), else if you have all the study material and are
quite disciplined, then I guess there isn't any need to join a
class...a mock test series at the end may prove quite beneficial
though.
I guess all the coaching classes provide study material that is decent enough, it all depends on the MBA aspirant.

well i think the coaching institutes in India have made a big
business...and if the students join kind of such institutes without
ever giving a thought to how to proceed their preparation then they are
just helping the business and not their career..I think the only
stipulation required to crack such entrances is determination and
perseverance (qualities of a true manager that iims test thruogh cat).
ANY DETERMINED PERSON CAN BE A PART OF AN IIM IRRELEVANT OF HIS PARTICIPATION IN ANY COACHING INSTITUE.
ALWAYS REMEMBER IF AN INSTITUTE HAS GOT PEOPLE WHO CRACKED CAT ,THEN ON THE SAME SIDE THEY HAVE ALSO GOT THOSE WHO COULD NOT.

i think why one shud join a coaching is coz it gives u a sense of de
competition you are gonna face wen u give the real test....also coachin
helps us b regular wid studies coz most of us don really have the will
power to sit n study by ourselves....
although one NEED NOT join a coachin if one has a good wil power to
push urself to study everyday....coz de syllabus isnt sumtin dat v cant
do on our own...but coachin does giv us lil more short cuts etc....so
dat helps/....
one shud find out how is de faculty of de inst....dats de most imp while decidin which coachin to join....

By NIRAV SHAH: According to me the coaching center gives us sort
of a regulation in preparation and also certain material is
available only at the class which they dont offer in correspodance
course.
Also it generates compitative spirit as we are in the class
Now before joining institue following point must be taken into consideration.
1. check the previous achivement of the institute
2. ask the students going there about the pedagogy
3. see there material
4. ask them wht they offer which other institues dont offer
