IIM - A

From : Chitranshu Mathur

FOR INTERVIEW:

1) INTERVIEW WAS FOR: IIM Ahmedabad
2) ABOUT YOURSELF (Education/Work Experience/List of calls): B. Tech. in Engineering Physics from IIT Bombay in 2006, prepared for IAS exams, taught at IMS, currently working at Zeus Learning, got all 6 IIM calls.
3) No. OF PEOPLE AT THE PANEL: Three
4) BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE INTERVIEW : The interview was basically a stress interview. They were more interested in seeing my reaction, when they asked many questions one after the other, or when they smiled at each other while listening to my answers.
5) KIND OF QUESTIONS ASKED: One professor asked me a physics problem, another one asked me about my career plans, what I have done so far and why, and how does that fit in with my wanting to get into IIMA, and the third one asked some questions on current affairs.
6) DURATION OF THE INTERVIEW: About 20 minutes.
7) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE: I would say it was strictly OK, because even though I answered most questions, I could have been a little more confident with some of them.
8) AREAS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE PERFORMED BETTER: I could have been more confident and calm during the interview. I did an OK job of handling the stress. I could have done better in that.
9) FINAL RESULT/ EXPECTED RESULT: Not sure. Will know by mid-April.
11) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UrPERCENTILE.COM SUBSCRIBERS PREPARING FOR INTERVIEW: In a stress interview, stay calm and stick to what you think is right. Very often, the interviewers might be more interested in seeing your attitude and demeanour under stress, and not your knowledge.

FOR GD:

There was no GD this time in IIM Ahmedabad. Instead, they had asked us to leave a page blank in the interview form, and on that day, after calling us in and seating us around in a GD-type arrangement, they gave us a topic ‘Worsening of female to male ratio in India’ and asked us to write an essay on it in 10 minutes in that one page which we had left blank. I had no problems with it and managed to write it comfortably in the given time.

INTERVIEW:

1) INTERVIEW WAS FOR: IIM A
2) ABOUT YOURSELF (Education/Work Experience) : B Tech (dual degree) Mech IITM
3) No. OF PEOPLE AT THE PANEL: 5
4) BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE INTERVIEW:  Interview mostly technical + business related, like tractor design and different manufacturers etc.
5) DURATION OF THE INTERVIEW: Around 20 min
6) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE: It was OK but I sounded not confident enough about my answers in IIMA interview.
7) AREAS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE PERFORMED BETTER: Being more confident about the answers and views which I knew to be correct, be more relaxed and composed. Going to practice interviews might have helped.
8) QUESTIONS THAT YOU FOUND DIFFICULT TO ANSWERS: Guess I was not convincing enough about why I would want a MBA. This is just my guess.
9) FINAL RESULT: Not selected
10) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE PREPARING FOR INTERVIEW: Have a broad knowledge base, know what’s happening around you in your core areas and be confident, quick footed while answering. I don't think the panel looks correct or wrong answers per se but to judge how observant you are and good at reacting to situations.

GD :

1) GD WAS FOR : IIMA
2) NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE GD : 8
3) NUMBER OF PEOPLE EVALUATING: 1

8) DURATION OF THE GD: Around 15-20 min
9) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE : IIMA was good contributed quite a few relevant points.
10) AREAS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE PERFORMED BETTER: I think I did pretty well in IIMA one. Considering that it was a quite group a bit of more aggressiveness could have been useful (but not sure though).
11) FINAL RESULT: Not selected
12) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE PREPARING FOR GD : Contribute meaningfully to the group and be respectful for the other members. Obscurantist behavior is mostly harmful.

GROUP DISCUSSION :

The case study was about 3 farmers who have committed suicide in the drought stricken area. The media is actively in the whole event . The area has poor credit facility for the farmers. Agriculture extension training program is not good enough. The pay package offered to the agri officers is not good. The district collector has to answer the chief minister about how will he handle the press conference to be held tomorrow. What should he tell the chief minister.

5 minutes were given to read the case and then 5 minutes to discuss.

It was quite an ordered case study where everyone got a chance to speak.

Overall I think I had a good performance in gd .i started it ,gave some new points which were well taken by the group but I think I could have done better in interview. I got a little nervous when they asked me about some facts and figures about Indian agriculture which I knew but could not recall at that time.
