From : Chitranshu Mathur

FOR INTERVIEW:

1) INTERVIEW WAS FOR: IIM Indore
2) ABOUT YOURSELF (Education/Work Experience/List of calls): B. Tech. in Engineering Physics from IIT Bombay in 2006, prepared for IAS exams, taught at IMS and now working at Zeus Learning, calls from all 6 IIMs.
3) No. OF PEOPLE AT THE PANEL : 2
4) BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE INTERVIEW : It was a very good interview, with a lot of grilling on current affairs and politics (something which I know a lot about). The questions were being asked in ‘rapid-fire’ mode, so I guess it could have become a stress interview if I had faltered.
5) KIND OF QUESTIONS ASKED: One professor grilled me completely on current affairs and politics, and I managed it very well. The other one asked some general questions about my name, my field of study, my present job, extra-curricular activities, etc.
6) DURATION OF THE INTERVIEW: 20 minutes (one guy outside actually timed me).
7) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE: I believe it was excellent. I was able to answer everything confidently and in detail, except one small question.
8) AREAS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE PERFORMED BETTER: It is easy to perform well when the interview goes on lines that you are confident about. What I have to look out for in the remaining interviews is to be confident and calm even when it goes on unexpected lines.
9) 3 QUESTIONS THAT YOU FOUND DIFFICULT TO ANSWER: There was just one question I didn’t answer – Who is R.K. Karanjia?
10) FINAL RESULT/ EXPECTED RESULT: I should get a final call. It is expected sometime in April.
11) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UrPERCENTILE.COM SUBSCRIBERS PREPARING FOR INTERVIEW: Try to get the interviewers on to your strong points. If they take the bait and start asking you about that, and if you can pull it off from there, you can rest assured you have done well.

FOR GD :

1) GD WAS FOR: IIM Indore
2) NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE GD: 6
3) NUMBER OF PEOPLE EVALUATING: 2 (the same 2 who took the interview)
4) ABOUT THE REMAINING MEMBERS IN THE GD: Mostly engineers, and with work-ex. One from IIT Kharagpur, one from BITS Pilani, one from DJ Sanghvi (in Mumbai). The Pilani guy is working in L&T, and there was someone who was with TCS, and one who had quit Infosys.
5) GD TOPIC: A one-page case study on a businesswoman who heads a BPO firm which is facing some problems due to harassing calls and safety of women employees. She wants to take some measures for this, but her business partner doesn’t want to give any money. What should she do?
6) BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE GD: It was not as good as I would have expected from a small group of 6 people. Some seemed overeager to speak, even if they were just repeating points.
7) DURATION OF THE GD: We had 5 minutes to read the case and write down some points, 12 minutes to discuss it, and 5 minutes to write a summary of the discussion.
8) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE: Not too good. I spoke a couple of times, emphasizing that the solutions being discussed are fine, but they have to be communicated properly between the lady and her business partner, because that is the basic problem.
9) AREAS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE PERFORMED BETTER: I just spoke twice in the GD and made decent points. However, in the middle of the GD, I had almost given up looking at the others fighting for speaking time.
10) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UrPERCENTILE.COM SUBSCRIBERS PREPARING FOR GD: Co-operate rather than compete. In a small group of 6 people with 12 minutes, everyone can get enough time to speak and make their points. But even then, if you are not letting others complete their points, and trying to hog the time, that will not help you. You cannot become the star of the GD just by repeating your own points. On the other hand, if there are others like this, you should fight for your chance to speak and make your points (something I did not do too well). Do not give up in the middle of the GD.
11) FEEDBACK ON THE WEBSITE URPERCENTILE.COM: It is a good forum for people to share their knowledge and experiences, and help each other perform better in achieving their goals

From : Souvik

Hi, This is my GD/PI experience of IIM Indore. The venue of the interview was IIMC. I reached there around 40 minutes before the schedule.

INTERVIEW :

1) INTERVIEW WAS FOR : IIM Indore

2) ABOUT YOURSELF (Education/Work Experience) : I did my graduation in Electrical Engineering in 2004. Since then, I’ve been working in IT industry. At present I’m deputed in Edinburgh , UK .

3) No. OF PEOPLE AT THE PANEL : 2 (One of around 35 years(P1), another of around 45 years(P2).

4) BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE INTERVIEW : P1 asked some questions from academics for around 10 minutes. Then P2 started asking some intricate political questions. This person hardly allowed me to complete my answers. He kept on shooting questions like anything. It seemed to be a stress interview. No questions from work ex, form. In all, it seems the interview did not go well.

5) KIND OF QUESTIONS ASKED :

Me : May I come in, Sir.
Panel – Yes.
P2 – May I have your file please.
Me – Sure, Sir (gave my file and he started inspecting my file)
P1 – So You are an Electrical Engineer. What are you doing now?
Me – At present I’m working in software industry with TCS.
P1 – Before that you worked for another company. What was the kind of work there?
Me – I worked in hardware support and networking.
P1 – What is Diode?
Me – (It was a kind of shocking question for me. After having three years of work ex he was asking question from basic Electronics that I studied in 2nd Sem. ) Sir, I could not remember it properly.
P1 – Can you say by any chance what Triode is?
Me – Sir, only thing I can remember it has three plates Cathode, Anode and Grid.
P1 – Is it not possible to have something with 4 or 5 plates?
Me – (By this time I understood that they are going to grill me with acads and also I could remember something) Sir, this is not possible because Triode has three plates because the grid is used to control the flow of electrons from Cathode to Anode. By putting a positive voltage on grid the electrons emitted from Cathode are repulsed.
P1 – What is Vacuum Tube?
Me – bla bla
P1 – Why it is so called?
Me – Because there is only vacuum between the Cathode and Anode.
P1 – What are the different kinds of lamps?
Me – bla bla
P1 – Principles of these etc.
Me – Answered some of the questions. But I’m pretty sure that I answered wrong in most of the questions. But still answered whatever I could remember.
P1 – How does electrical greaser work?
Me – bla bla
P1 – How does power consumption affect when the speed is regulated by regulator?
Me – Answered wrong in this question
P1 – Ok, one last question from the basics. Tell me about the distribution of power starting from the generation of power from from water energy.
Me – bla bla Now he asked the other person to ask his questions.
P2 – I was watching the interview. You seemed to be confused with your answers.
Me – Yes, Sir. As I was out of touch of my acads for quite a long time and at present I’m working on completely different things, I can remember little about these.
P2 – Why do you think Pakistan is producing so many autocratic leaders while India is producing none?
Me – bla bla
P2 – Why is West Bengal progressing little for the past 10 – 15 years?
Me – Talked about no change of government for so long.
P2 – What is the cause of insurgency in Assam ?
Me – Talked about dissatisfaction because of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh etc.
P2 – What do you think a Chinese will say to an Indian when met in China ?
Me – Said something positive like both are growing economy. Chances of being world leader by mutual support etc.
P2 – What do you think an Assamese will say to a Bengali?
Me – Nothing special. Just he will behave similarly as he will with another Assamese.
P2 – What do you think an Assamese will say to a Bihari?
Me – Again Sir I don’t think of anything special.
P2 – Are you saying there were no problems between Assam and Bihar at any point of time?
Me – Yes there were but that should not impact the personal relationship between two individuals. These problems arise because of few people but most of the normal people has nothing to do with these.
P2 asked me few more questions on politics. Cannot remember those well.

6) DURATION OF THE INTERVIEW : 20 Minutes

7) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE : I was out of touch from acads for around 3 years. So I could not answer most of the questions correctly. But tried to answer the questions as far as I could remember.

8) AREAS WHERE YOU COULD HAVE PERFORMED BETTER : I could have answered the questions related to acads in a more structured way.

9) QUESTIONS THAT YOU FOUND DIFFICULT TO ANSWERS : Acads questions.

10) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UrPERCENTILE.COM SUBSCRIBERS PREPARING FOR INTERVIEW : Before going to IIMI interview brush up your acads. IIMI is asking acad related questions almost to everyone.

GD :

1) GD WAS FOR : IIM Indore

2) NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE GD : 8

3) NUMBER OF PEOPLE EVALUATING : 2

4) ABOUT YOURSELF (Education/Work Experience) : I did my graduation in Electrical Engineering in 2004. Since then, I’ve been working in IT industry. At present I’m deputed in Edinburgh , UK .

5) ABOUT THE REMAINING MEMEBRS IN THE GD : No idea. No introduction was there in the GD. But it seems most of them were freshers.

6) GD TOPIC : Topic was a case. Mr. Roy is CEO of a chemical company which is not performing well for sometime. The company has decided to launch a new product. Mr. Roy has formed a team for deciding the marketing strategy for this product. Different options were to market through distribution channel, through existing network of dealers who did not have much exposure in that kind of product, by acquiring a small company and do the marketing using their network.

7) BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE GD : The GD became a fish market. There was a girl who kept on speaking in so loud voice it was difficult to discuss without creating a fish market.

8) DURATION OF THE GD : They gave 5 min for reading the case, 16 min for the discussion and another 5 min for writing the summary of the discussion.

9) HOW WAS YOUR PERFORMANCE : Not too good. Spoke twice or thrice. Made some valid points. Tried to converge into a solution.

10) YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE UrPERCENTILE.COM SUBSCRIBERS PREPARING FOR GD : IIMI is giving case to discuss. So not much to prepare beforehand. It depends on the case.

From : Sulagna  Bhattacharya

FOR GD :

In IIM-I, There was a case given to us – Basically a HR related case. I was much satisfied with my own performance and the GD went on very cool & smooth. We had two profs., and 7 students in the panel – 2 were absent.

FOR PI :
About the PI, I must group it – one, I would just mention the Qs asked – no need to enter the details of how I answered – that's meaningless. In the second part, I would selectively write the more "intriguing" conversation we had.

PART – I

1)     Difference b/w mean & avg
2)     while mentioning the avg salary, which form of central tendency is used? Which measure SHOULD be used?
3)     Forms/types/names of distribution functions.
4)     What is the correlation between my CAT score & my brain.(A tricky one!!! You can't mention a too high number like 0.98 – that's too boisterous – and neither a too low one – it's a sign of your lack of self – confidence!)
5)     Problems on AP/GP
6)     Difference between Skewness/Kurtosis.
7)     What is the anomaly is the standard definition of probability.
8)     Examples of monopoly/natural monopoly/perfect competition/oligopoly.
9)     A few trifles regarding acads which I don't rem now.

PART – II

Q – you see – so many theories in eco r there, but when we teach it to the students they don't wanna learn & say that they won't study something which has no practical application. Could you tell me whats the use teaching these things, then?
A – could I frankly open my mind Sir….
Q – oh sure ….
A – I feel it's useless. Trying to by-heart loads of things which are just vague concepts can't help us. We must know the real life examples as well. For example…(I cited a concept from eco which finds no application in real life).
Q – that's nice….
A – (After the PI was over,I remembered that IIM-I puts no stress on theory, and they teach mainly by cases !!! Perhaps that's why they asked this)

Now comes a most peculiar portion where I made a blunder, really – but thankfully the Profs were in good mood, or else maybe they could have a fit.
Q – At every nook & corner, beauty contests are coming up.What is your opinion on them?
A – there are 2 dimensions…..Economic & social.
Q – please explain……ECONOMIC dimension how come? Okay, explain the social thing 1st.
A – (I am against these,so explained my stand,  and ended by saying) so you see, beauty has nothing to do with brains in these contests – if for example I wanna join one,I won't be allowed bcz of my short height……..but what has my height got to do with my brains? So a reference to "Beauty with brains" in meaningless in such contests.
Q – And the economic dimension? I couldn't at ALL understand it.
A – yes Sir,there certainly is ! These contests give a boost to various cosmetic companies' sales – as girls think they can improve their looks by using those things.
Q – Those things ! What are those things?
Q – (the other Prof) Define "Those things."
A – (I have never in my life used ANY cosmetics/make-up…….I just don't even KNOW what are the things ppl use. I never expected to answer this Q, and the blunder started!!!)  Well, those products are those which girls use in order to add sheen to their skin, shine in their hair, to become fair……
Q – (They perhaps understood I had no knowledge on the subject,so wanted to ask Q on this only.) Yes, we understand that. Name some of those products.
A – (This time really I was stumped, u can be sure……fumbled for a second & then answered) for example, lipstick….
Q – (Burst into laughter before I even finished) Oh, so nowadays it has come to that?? Lipsticks, when applied, make girls fair?? We had no idea !!!!! (Laughter)
A – ( I became desperate now) Sir, actually I never use those products,so just it came out…..actually,  those things mean several lotions, creams etc available on market…..
Q – (stopped me,while laughing still),okay, you need'nt explain. We can be sure at least YOU are not going in for any beauty contest !! (laughter continued)
A – (was a lil ashamed of myself & my ignorance) oh, that's for sure Sir.
Q – What is your idea of Fair & Lovely cream?
A – I think it's a bad advertisement to be expected out of HLL. It merely depicts that as long as a girl is dark, she is unsuccessful. But as soon as she becomes fair by using it, she becomes successful, at least in terms of the number of boys grabbing her.
(They now just roared with laughter. But I don't yet understand what went wrong here. The HLL ad just depicts this only)
Q – (after checking himself) rank in terms of beauty: Mother Teresa, Aishwarya Rai & Sonia Gandhi.
A – (I still wonder why they were so much fascinated with only beauty-related topics!!)  Mother Teresa is the most beautiful, and Ash is the ugliest.
Q – Why?
A – Beauty is not what is seen in the mirror…..it is what you are deep inside your heart…..if you have made others feel happy because of your existence, nothing can be more beautiful than that, Sir. Mother Teresa did exactly that. Sonia Gandhi has also made contributions, even if in politics – and has shown enough power in herself. But Ash's contribution to society,or even any meaningful sphere of life, is nothing, but to provide some temporary, cheap entertainment without any depth so as to make this world more meaningful to those who are deprived & poor. That is what I kept in mind while ranking them.
Q – (Both smiled) Would you like to have some biscuits?
A – (Politely denied…..biscuits, indeed ! That too after saying such a stupid thing !!!)
Formalities over & I left.

However, both the Profs were very calm, cool & understanding, and quite humorous. Otherwise – I don't know……..
Overall it took 35 minutes. This is also too long a duration compared to the avg 10-15 minutes. But I enjoyed every moment of that – except the blundering moment, of course. But I am not sorry for that. I think I displayed what was required  of me on that particular occasion.

This time also - no Q on work exp, why another MBA & Current Affairs.....or hobbies.

Hope this benefits some students.
