“Poverty of 3rd world countries is due to the 1st world.” It was more than a fish market,I would say. I didn’t participate much – bcz of the same reasons I hold. Could speak only 4-5 times – and I mean “Speaking”, mind u, not “Shouting”.
FOR PI :
The PI was a horrid one,I must say.There was a man & a lady. For your info(and perhaps to my ill luck),I was carrying my office briefcase with me,which being made of leather,had a look of being too heavy compared to my own slim/thin features.Now – as soon as I entered & wished them – a horrific attack started………….as follows…………
Q – What is this???
A – What is what,Sir?
Q – what is this u have with u?
A – (baffled really,but didn’t show it) where? What exactly u wanna know sir?
Q – in ur hand.
A – oh that ! Well, its my office brief.
Q – why did u carry ur office brief here in IIM? Is it ur office?
A – certainly not sir, but this is the best platform which would prepare me for using this brief most efficiently.(I afterwards wondered HOW I could remain so calm & give such a pat answer.I congratulate myself for this answer even now!))
Q – what is the average weight of u & ur brief?
A – (politely) simple avg wt or weighted avg wt, Sir?
Q – (Both laughed) you just look like the finance minister entering the room for delivering the budget speech(IIMK was on 3rd March).Isnt? (the lady also admitted it).
A – I m indeed delighted sir,that u draw similarities between me & such an honorable,educated person as the FM.
Q – with ur edu background, we suggest you must opt a career for becoming the 1st woman FM in India.
A – I am not interested in politics,sir.
Q – but being FM doesn’t make it a must to be a politician.Name a good FM of India.
A – Man Mohan Singh.
Q – was he a politician throughout?
A – No.But which office he held b4 that I am not sure.Perhaps RBI.
Q – u r right.He was not a politician,but an economist.Why don’t u follow his footsteps as well?
A – I am sorry sir,but I don’t want to others’ footsteps,but want to create my own footsteps for others to follow.Secondly,I repeat, I don’t wanna involve in politics.
Q – but u NEEDN’T be a politician……..u just need to be a good economist.
A – Beg to differ with u,but at least during my TENURE as FM, politics will actively enter my arena of working.This is just seen from our latest budget as well where economically important but politically contentious issues like subsidy,disinvestment were not even mentioned! Good eco in India is always tampered with politics,good or bad,coupled with too much bureaucratic interference.In a corporate career such interference would be less.
Q – so u want to avoid conflict.Hmmmmm……conservative!
A – no sir,but practical. As a manager I not only just wanna avoid unnecessary conflict,but also to minimize them,and firstly,try so that they don’t arise at all.
(At this stage both of them are silent for full 1 minute,but I remained alert.Then I thought it is meaningless sitting there,showing them my face,so decided to speak up)
A – Isn’t there anything else u would like to discuss please?
Q – yes.(the lady) what did u study in HR during MBA?
A – (mentioned certain topics)
Q – which theories of motivation?
A – I am long outta touch,however,can rem only a few…….Maslow’s hierarchy of need, theory X/Theory Y…
Q – By whom?
A – not sure,but most probably McGregor.
Q – WHO? Mcgregor????????who is he?
A – (Understood at once she was trying to pull me out of my composure,and at once also got it – certainly this theory was dev by McGregor only,or else she wouldn’t have put it that way.) He is a well-known HR theorist,and to the best of my knowledge,propounder of theory X/Theory Y. Q – compare Maslows theory with ERG theory.
A – forgotten what ERG theory says.Mam,please mention the full form.
Q – Existence-relatedness-growth.
A – (It came back to me, and I answered)
Q – (another 2/3 acad Q,but since it’s too technical,it wont benefit all students of UrPercentile.So I am not mentioning them.)
Q – (the man) can u take my place & start interviewing other students?
A – I can give it a fair try.
Q – WHAT !!!!!!!!!! You are ready to replace an IIM Professor???
A – I don’t want to replace an IIM Prof – it isn’t feasible with my acads/exp – but I can certainly complement him.
Q – do u think u r suitable for doing it?
A – It doesn’t matter whether I think myself suitable – it’s YOU who initiated such a proposal Sir,so perhaps YOU consider me suitable for the purpose?
Q – what will you do after u leave this room?
Q – (The lady now) what would you take in today’s lunch?
Q – (The man) do u like cakes or pastries?
A – ( I just couldn’t understand why so much interest in food……both looked pretty thin !) I like both…..and if you’d like to have some,I can procure them from outside & share them with you.
Q – who is the person you hate most?
A – (smiled & said) sorry to say right now,sir……….actually I didn’t do a love/hate SWOT analysis/ranking before coming here.But if you wanna know,and give me some time,I may try thinking of it.
Q – (both of them smiled) no,that wont be necessary.

Now,dear friends,don’t be afraid that all of you would also face a similar PI exp. My profile is a little bit unusual for them – with 2 masters,including a well-branded MBA,and with 2 International certifications – 1 from US & another from Germany – in each case from one of their most reputed institutes. So it’s natural that I withstand more stress than most of my counterparts. But God – this was a PI where the stress was too much direct & visible. But I don’t repent it. Maybe I won’t be selected but there’s no use thinking about it anymore.
