Accommodation / Campus: 1. They provide accommodation in hostel # 9, but I stayed out of the campus. 2. They had arranged food stalls, so I was able to take something as I could not take my lunch. 3. The campus is very well maintained and the feeling of “IIT” is there. The students were good and helpful. 4. We had a presentation first, and then GD/PI started. 5. One down point was that they had asked us to make arrangement to stay for two days, but the process was to get finished in 4-5 hours only. So, one day wasted, as it is difficult to get reservations in Tatkal for all trains. 6. Kanpur is OK kind of city, not great, but not bad either. But inside the campus, you have all amenities.
Interview:
1. Our group had PI first, followed by GD. 2. Panel consisted of 3 persons, including the HOD of the department. 3. Question asked were: 4. Description about work experience 5. What did you study in economics during engineering 6. Economics was in which semester in your college? 7. Who is the professor of economics in your college 8. Solve the given problem from calculus 9. Some questions from chemistry, as I am a chemical engineer 10. Fortunately, I was able to answer satisfactorily to all questions.
Group Discussion:
1. Panel was of three members and one member kept time.
2. We sat around rectangular table
3. Topic: “MBA in India is highly over rated”.
4. We were given 2 minutes each to speak individually, and then discuss for around five minutes.
5. The initial 2 minutes time was OK, after that everyone enjoyed in the fish market condition. Invigilators relieved when we stopped J
6. I was not able to do good due to the fish market condition. This is common to all in the group.
This is the account of my GD/PI experience.
Place: SJMSOM, IIT Bombay
Date: 7th of March (Wednesday) My profile:
JMET Rank: +500
Degree: BE Chemical from NIT Durgapur
Work-ex: Reaching 3 years in core industry
Extra-curricular: Many
I reached there 30 minutes late, by the time the presentation was over, but I could manage to make up, as the process had not started. We were given an application form to fill up, and we had to verify the documents and submit the attested zerox copies. Some students, who didn’t bring some zerox or attestation, were asked to do this later. So better to go all prepared. 30-40% of the people present had met me at IIT Kanpur GD/PI also, so it was strange feeling to see them again.
GD:
-----
It was a case study, where a university is facing problems as the students are downloading videos and doing illegal downloads from restricted websites, in the turn making the connectivity very slow and the college is receiving complaints also. We had to prepare a policy for that. 5 minutes to mote down points. Then we were allowed to speak for 1 minute individually at the beginning, at random order being called by them. At the end, there was 4-5 minutes of open GD. GD was not a fishmarket, but only 3-4 people could speak because of time constraints.
PI
-----
Panel:
1. VGSOM Professor –same who was in GD
2. Lady from HR – same who was in GD
3. Another person who just watched. - New
The questions asked were like this: (They glanced through my forms, SOPs etc through out the interview…)
Your schooling was all done at …., your home town? It is in ….. And then you did BE from ……
What are your work experiences?
OK, you worked at …. (He knew the company and place). The company has another plant at …..
What are the different types of products of your company…
Tell full form of all..
What is the chemical composition of … ?
Was that job plant based or what?
Why did you change your job?
(So this one doesn’t involve getting dirty… Good…) What are your present job responsibilities… (in detail)
Why do you want to do MBA?
Will you remain in the same core industry, or change to other management streams? (Now the lady from HR asks)
How was the GD? (I said, I could not speak well in the later part)
Why couldn’t you speak? (Explained that several people were speaking at the same time)
In group conditions it happens, you should make your way in…
(Explained..)
(Now the lady gives the papers to the prof.)
Are you taking part in games and sports, or left all..
What are your interests… (I detailed my co-curricular activities in my college… They seemed impressed)
OK, Thank you.
Time: Around 10-15 minute (I didn’t keep watch over time)
They looked cool, and impression was good. But they didn’t go deep anywhere. For me too like many other people, it seemed that the decision for selection was mostly made before the interview.

IITR
Accommodation / Campus:
1. They have provided nice accommodation @Rs 100/- per bed (Rs 200 per room).
There was no problem, and I enjoyed my stay there.
2. They had arranged food stalls, so I was able to take something as I could not
take my lunch.
3. The campus is very well maintained, and compared to some other IITs where
there is wastage of land, here the departments and hostels are adjacent, but the
campus is still very big.
4. The department of management studies is a two stories building.
5. In short, they provide what ever they claim on their website.
Group Discussion:
1. At the start of the GD, the asked us to be original, and not to “represent
your coaching institutes”. “Don’t flood us with data and statistics, just
express your views”.
2. Panel was of two members and we sat in semi-circular arrangement.
3. We were given two topics, we had to choose one after discussion for 2
minutes. We discussed on the topic related to Management education in India, and
left the topic “Do NGOs in India really work for others or work for their vested
interests?” We had a clear consensus in a moment.
4. It was a fish market most of the time.
5. There were people who didn’t stop talking, making mockery of the group
dynamics.
6. Time for discussion: 08 minutes.
7. Persons in panel: 9
8. The panel interrupted us two times, and asked one person to speak at a time.
But after a while, there was again fish market.
9. Suggestion: Prevent a fish market situation. It pulls everyone down.
Interview:
1. Panel was of three members, perhaps the HOD was in the panel too.
2. There were three panels with simultaneous interviews going on.
3. This was a cool interview. They asked about:
4. about my name
5. about my state of residence, condition there
6. full form for some abbreviations
7. It was a general interview, where questions were asked based on the student
profile only, and they ask some GK questions to change the mood.
8. Suggestion: Be yourself, and stay cool.
I have taken reference from some of my previous posts, but when compiled as a
whole, this will help some of PGies:
First Document verification:
They ask your form, bio-sketch, work-ex writeup and work-ex certificates. There
you sign the attendance sheet. In the attendance sheet at the time of
registration and document verification, make sure to notice the First column –
Serial number and Second column – Merit number. This is your new merit position. And don’t lose
heart if it has slide; this new rank will not last long J
GD:
The panel first writes down the criterion for evaluation of the GD on the white
board. This is usual stuff like: ability to communicate clearly, ability to
analyze, ability to participate in group, etc. They write two topics on board,
after discussion (we had voting by raising hands) we have to decide one in 2
minutes, then we get 2 minutes to note points, and then one of the panel members
gives signal to start. We had two topics, which I know was repeated from some
groups because I met one guy who knew the topics and was preparing for that.
1. Morals and values among Indians is degenerating.
2. Government control in higher education is interfering and not required.
We had fish market through out, but the panel never interrupted us. In a group
of 12, only 2-3 were able to make them heard, and these were the guys who spoke
violently. I always had a belief that you can win in a gentlemanly manner, but
here I repented. Several times you get into the condition that 4 people are
speaking. And at those moments the panel members were looking and listening to
the guy with the loudest and most clear voice. May be they had accepted fish
market as a way of life. So my take is, persist, don’t expect the panel members
to intervene to your rescue. Play “their” game!
PI:
PI consists of general stuff, and is profile based. One thing common is the
inclination towards economy and finance.
1. Describe yourself.
2. Tell us about your work experience.
3. How your educations of a chemical engineer help you in management profession?
4. Why do you want to do MBA?
5. What are your hobbies and extra curricular activities?
6. Do you read chemical engineering journals, which one?
7. Do you take interests in the financial scenario also?
8. What is the condition of the present economy?
9. Some times in our professional job, we have to compromise in personal
integrity. Will you compromise and to what extent?
10. Do you know about one company in the south, named …(?)… which is very famous
for its ethical policies?
Duration: 12-15 minutes.
Misc posts :
In the attendance sheet at the time of registration and document verification,
First column – Serial number
Second column – Merit number
In my form, they cut the “merit number” by a blue pen, to avoid panic among
students. But the printed words make it clear. I hope there is no doubt now.
The moderators don’t ask our names or anything. They say “all the best” and
write down the criterion on the white board. This is usual stuff like: ability
to communicate clearly, ability to analyze, ability to participate in group,
etc.

No, I didn’t notice that. Any way, by now that rank doesn’t matter. I wish all
of us all the best!
