There was no surprise element in the exam as was the case last year. The pattern and difficulty level of the exam was as specified in their brochure and was similar to the last year. There were 200 questions to be solved in 150 minutes . The 200 questions can be divided in 5 sections with each section having 40 questions. There was no sectional time limit or sectional cut off. Each correct answer was awarded by 1 marks and there was penalty of -0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Each question had 4 choices . With 200 questions to be solved in 150 minutes it was the speed and proper selection of questions that was to be given importance. Ability to select the proper questions was the key to success. DETAILS OF THE PAPER ARE : VERBAL : There were 40 questions in this section out of which 16 questions were based on RC. There were 3 passages in total as per following details.
The remaining 24 questions were on fill in the blanks, Antonyms, Synonyms, Sentence correction, Idioms, Jumbled sentences and Analogy . The questions were not very difficult. REASONING : This was a bit time consuming section and there were very few easy questions in this section. There were questions based on strong and weak arguments, Probably true/ definitely true, conclusion / inference based on passage, Input / Output , reasoning questions based on graphs, coding –decoding , series, family tree, multi dimensional arrangements, puzzles etc. Out of the 40 questions in this section only 20 questions were of difficult in nature. A score of 20 is a good score in this section. QUANTITATIVE : There were 40 questions in total. 30 questions were based on Number system, percentages, ratio, profit and loss, simple interest / compound interest, Mixtures, averages, 2D and 3 D geometry , time and work etc. 10 questions were based on permutation and combination, sets, log, and physics based question. In total 15 questions were easy , 15 questions were of moderate difficulty level and 10 questions were difficult. A good score would be 20 marks in 35 minutes. GENERAL AWARENESS : There were 40 questions on GA . Questions were based on advertisements, International organizations, sports, awards, books and author, Budget and finance policy, constitution, financial institutions, etc. No separate preparation was required to attempt this section. Five sections, 40 Questions each, 2.5 hrs
English:-
5 Q - Fill In the Blanks
5 Q - Synonyms
5 Q - Antonyms
2 Q - Analogies
5 Q - Jumble Up sentences
2 Q - Idioms
3 paragraphs( with 4-5 Q each)
Overall an easy section to tackle. Questions are of Average Difficulty level.
Quant:-
1/3 rd questions are very easy, can be solved without any calculations :-), some are of average difficulty level( can be solved by minimal calculations), 4-5 Questions were sitters.
Overall easy section( that depends from person to person :-)
DI/DS :-
Three types of DS questions were there:
1> two statements :- Data Sufficiency
2> with three statements :- Data Sufficiency
3> with Four Statements :- Data Redundancy( which statements are not required to solve the question!!).
DI : some sets are easy(majority), some are sitters(minority)
overall average/medium difficulty
LA :-
Usual questions on arrangements(IIM Grads, wife,years of married life, hotel rooms), family(very simple), Venn-Diagram, Logically following statements(all pens are books, no books are board types: easy), Probably true/Probably False/Definetly true/Defintely false statements from a passage, summary making, etc.
Overall medium difficulty level.
GK:-
Covering political GK( role of election commision, what is planning commision, who releases five yr plans, who conducts presedential elections, panchayat raj is which type of government, who is higher in ranks Judge of SC/Cheif Admiral/Lok Sabha Speaker/ MP, two questions on Dam/Canal Projects, diseases and causing microbes, ELISA test is for.., etc.)
overall difficulty average.
So the whole paper is of average difficulty, 100 attempts with 80% accuracy is very much possible.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NMAT 2005 PATTERN NMAT -Dec 2005 pattern and difficulty level was as expected and as per their brochure. It was of 2.5 hours with 200 questions to be solved. There was a negative marking of -.33 for wrong answer. Sectional cut off is likely not there. There were 5 sections in the test with each one having 40 questions. SECTION 1 of English had 3 passage for RC, few questions on Vocabulary , Sentence correction, jumbled paragraph and fill in the blanks. SECTION 2 of Reasoning had questions Critical reasoning , Coding decoding, next in the series, Data arrangement and verification, Odd one out etc. SECTION 3 of Data Interpretation (30 Questions) and Data Sufficiency (10 questions) had questions Bar chart, Pie Chart, Line Chart, caselets , tables and Data sufficiency . SECTION 4 on Quantitative ability had questions from Number system, sets, Mixture , Ratio ,Mensuration, Co-ordinate Geometry, Permutation and Combination, (UrPercentile.com) Profit and loss, Time and Speed, Time and work, Interest ( Compound and Simple), Instalments etc. SECTION 5 on General awareness : Static GK, Sports, Brand name (Punch line), geography, Authors, Constitution and current business and general awareness.
